About Blazing Canes!: Blazing Canes! is a reed duo (clarinets and saxophone) that present music from the classical era (W.A. Mozart, L. Beethoven) through the American songbook (G. Gershwin, Scott Joplin), as well as various types of global music (Cuban, Klezmer).
Program Description: Blazing Canes! Is a duo comprised of Tim Zavadil and Rena Kraut. Their repertoire includes a wide variety of music from a variety of time periods and areas of the world. Blazing Canes! emphasize meeting students where they are, so content may adapt for different age levels and settings.
For all student levels, we will discuss how the instruments work (reed vibrations) and explore how size impacts the sound (bigger=lower). For younger students, Blazing Canes! present binary concepts such as loud/soft and slow/fast, why a composer might use these musical tools, and how these elements might make the students feel. For the later elementary students, content will be adjusted to add more nuance to the dynamics and tempo markings. For middle schoolers, learning goals will address simple musical forms and give a little more detail on the lives of the composers. For high school, more detail is given to the humanity of each composer, what they may have been experiencing when they composed the music, as well as exploring music from a variety of cultures.
